Wanna hear a genius idea?
You take a game that is a cash cow...renowned for its deep pockets, lasting investment in online art, periodically-good storylines, etc...and WHILE you are waiting to release its very last expansion, which will be a quality product but takes MONTHS to produce and beta-test to your standards (which you have turned into INDUSTRY standards)...you realize that your numbers will tank until its release. So what do you do?
You release a game for CASUALS...something that will keep interest in your flagship title while tying your new release to that title...a game that is slow-paced, turn-based, and thoughtful, but based on a pre-existing game.
Specifically, Magic: The Gathering.
Hearthstone feels like M:TG during the Beta days...not a lot of crazy powers and whatnot, BUT, the capability to constantly acquire new and RARE/Epic/Legendary cards exists while you play. You don't play against AIs, you play against other players with limited interaction aside from laying cards and schooling newbs. You play as any character class with card abilities specific to that class, and more cards unlock as you "level" your class.
All in all, a solid little distraction if you like the old-school collectible card game genre. For me, at the top of Wizard 101 and waiting for its next release this month...it's a good time to play flash games, console games, and this.
Looking forward to Drakengard 3, Dragon Age 3, and Scott's mom.
